Autism aid app developed for children in Ghana

According to a profile in The Guardian, the center provides education for 18 autistic children aged between five and 15. The center is in private hands and has been selected as one of the pioneering spots for trials using a new autism aid app, designed in Ghana. The app uses a set of audio and visual educational tools to help young people with autism to learn.

Outlining how the app is used in the center’s learning activities, teacher Victoria Nyarko enthusiastically describes the integration of the app into a home economics lesson: “Today we are doing the kitchen materials. They [the children] like it because it kind of talks back to them … it communicates with them, and they like to touch it a lot.”

The basis of the app is software that runs a picture exchange communication system (Pecs (pdf)). This program uses visuals to instigate communication in children.

The app developed by the AUTISM AMBASSADORS OF GHANA. This is an organization that brings together students, various individuals and volunteers who help to create awareness and also help to support lives of children living with Autism in Ghana.

The app is the the first of its kind to be developed and used in sub-Saharan Africa. The app was created by Alice Amoako and Solomon Avemegah. The run a body called the founded Autism Ambassadors of Ghana (AAG), with the app being backed by Reach for Change International.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, interests and behavior. The causes of autism may vary between individuals; most scientists think there is a genetic or environmental (or even microbial) cause.

The app is available via Google Play.
