Apple unveiled the new features of iOS 8, an update to its operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Monday at the Worldwide Developers conference.
The new operating system, iOS 8, which will be available for free download in the fall, includes new additions to iMessage, keyboard, design, photos, Siri and many more features that will try to compete with rival smartphones such as Android.
Apple claims that iOS 8 will be the biggest release yet. Last fall, Apple released iOS 7, which was the most impacting update of a mobile operating system to-date.
iMessages is a critical app for Apple so there are huge changes coming. The new operating system will allow a person to add their voice to a message by simply touching a microphone button to record a message. The new messages app will also allow people to send quick videos, ad delete them, as they are happening (similar to Snapchat).
Group messages will be experiencing major updates. With iOS 8, group messages can receive a name (similar to GroupMe). Users will also be able to leave group messages or turn on the do not disturb feature and read the messages later.
Locations will also be able to be shared directly in the messages app. By sharing your location, friends and family will be able to see your exact location on a map.
A new feature in iMessages will allow people to see every attachment from that specific message to-date, without having to scroll through previous messages. Sending multiple videos and photos at once is another feature to iOS 8.
iOS 8 will bring the biggest overhaul to the keyboard in iPhone history. The new operating system will predict what a person is likely to say next. As a person types they will see choices of words or phrases that they are most likely to type next. Previous conversation history (kept only on your iPhone) helps the iOS predict what you are going to say next to a certain person.
New interactive notifications will be available. Users will be able to reply to messages, posts and emails directly from the notification center without leaving the app that is currently being used.
A new favorites shortcut will also be a feature in iOS 8. When pressing the home button twice to see the multitasking interface, there is a new feature that shows the faces of people that you have recently talked to and by swiping to the right favorites will be shown. With just a tap, users will be able to call, text or FaceTime.
This is a completely new feature that Apple is introducing in iOS 8. With the new Health app heart rate, calories burned, blood sugar, cholesterol and much more are put into one app. Outside health apps will be able to access this information to help improve their app.
Minor changes will be made to the photos application. Apple will offer storage for all photos an videos in the cloud to be accessed by any device. New Smart Editing features will be provided as well to make amazing edits to photos and videos.
There are many new features being added to the new operating system, iOS 8, which can be found here.
In addition to iOS 8, Apple also introduced OS X Yosemite for Mac.
