Menlo Park - It's difficult to believe Facebook has been around for only 10 years. Ten years today, in fact. So what is the story so far?
That may be difficult to believe, but the WorldWideWeb is only twice as old, which sounds a lot, but it is still only another 10 years. A sizeable percentage of the global village is now growing up in a world that has always known the Internet. But more parochially, what is the Facebook story so far?
Well, it was launched February 4, 2004, and in no particular order it has seen its CEO become a billionaire; gone public; seen the development of a series of apps; been at the centre of a fake fans racket; and seen its first "Facebook murder." (They do call this social media, don't they?)
It has also been credited/blamed along with other social media for bringing about literal revolutions, especially in the Arab world, and uniting old friends and new, including for dating.
Mark Zuckerberg has promised the best is yet to come (hopefully no more murders!), but perhaps the most curious thing about Facebook is that it now has its own Twitter account.
