A list of the world's leading centers for technology have been revealed. The city occupying the number one spot might come as a surprise (and it isn't San Francisco).
When compiling a list of technology centers of excellence the the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area often comes to mind. Dubbed 'Silicon Valley' this area is host to firms like Twitter and Uber, and hundreds of technology based start-ups. Alternatively there is Taiwan's innovative Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park. Here companies like Acer, Giga and Realtek can be found.
The area that tops a new poll of leading technology centers is, according to a review by Collin Marshall writing in The Guardian, Santiago’s ‘Chilecon Valley’, with the second spot given over to the South Korean capital Seoul. the reason why Chile is a tech hub is due, in part, to incentive programs like the state-backed, foreigner-friendly Start-Up Chile.
According to The Economist, “Start-Up Chile” is the brainchild of Nicolas Shea, a Chilean businessman who had a brief spell in government. The relatively new program selects promising new firms and gives their founders the equivalent of $40,000 and a year’s visa to come and work on their ideas in Chile.
With South Korea, the focus is on the Songdo International Business District. This area was constructed some 12 years ago, with the city built upon 600 hectares of reclaimed waterfront land. The cost was a whopping $40 billion but the end result was the world’s first smart city, as well as being the world's largest ever private development.
On alternate lists, such as the one produced by the research company 2thinknow for Business Insider, San Francisco remained in the top spot from a list of 85 selected cities. The reason for remaining at number one was because the area is the "undeniable epicenter of all things tech, from its gigantic startup culture to its venture capital scene to its population of designers and programmers."
Nonetheless, the changing business and technology landscape, with different cities and regions vying for the top spot, is a sure sign of the global spread of technology and a growing sign of how technology continues to influence our everyday lives.
