The Cybertruck
The new all-electric pickup will be unveiled at Tesla’s design studio in Los Angeles California which is on the same lots as Tesla’s SpaceX headquarters. Musk tweeted: “Cybertruck unveil on Nov 21 in LA near SpaceX rocket factory.”
Musk had originally intended to show the pickup earlier this year but in November announce he would reveal it later this November: “The Tesla pickup truck, described by Elon Musk as “the coolest car I’ve ever seen,” is now looking at a November reveal at the earliest, according to a tweet from the Tesla CEO. The science-fiction inspired electric pickup truck had been expected to arrive this summer, or October at the latest, based on previous statements made by the notoriously optimistic Musk.”
With his usual optimistic hype Musk claimed the Cybertruck had a “heart-stopping” design with better utility than a Ford F-150 and better performance than a basic Porsche 911.
The idea of a Tesla pickup has been around for quite a while
Back in 2013 Musk mentioned that he had a desire to take on the Ford F-150 at an event. Musk has spent the last few years on the truck but has announced few details. However he now says the truck will seat six, and start at around $50,000. It will have a 400 to 500 mile ranges for the highest priced models. He has also suggested that the top-end version will be powered by a dual-motor system and have a towing capacity of 300,000 pounds.
The November 21st date will be the same as that of the Los Angeles Auto Show where Ford is expected to reveal its own first mass produced electric vehicle an SUV inspired by the Mustang. Tesla has a history of putting on its own events rather than unveiling models at traditional auto shows.
Electric cars still a small portion of total vehicle market
While electric vehicles are growing in popularity across the globe and being pushed in some countries, they still make up only about one or two percent of the market although the percentage varies greatly between different areas. Pickup sales have picked up a great deal and may provide a big opportunity for companies who launch a viable electric pickup. There is no release date for Tesla’s electric pickup as yet, but within the next two to three years Ford will release an all-electric Ford F-150 and there will also be an electric pickup coming from GMC. Tesla had better get its own truck on the market soon if it wants a head start on the competition.
