Report finds cloud adoption exceeds necessary security measures

The new Bitglass Cloud Adoption study examines the rate of cloud adoption for over 138,000 global companies. The study looks at the rate of cloud adoption for over 138,000 global companies.

With cloud adoption, 86 percent of enterprises have deployed cloud-based tools. The reason for this, the report finds, is that organizations that migrate to the cloud are able to remain competitive and keep pace with the ever-growing productivity and flexibility demands placed upon them by the market.

One important finding is that even as the use of cloud apps has grown extensively over the past 12 months, just 34 percent of companies have implemented single-sign on (SSO). This is regarded by analysts as one of the more basic cloud security tools.

In addition to tracking SSO usage, the report dives into adoption rates for different cloud-based tools, including Microsoft Office 365, G Suite, AWS, Slack, Salesforce, Box and ServiceNow.

In terms of popular applications, the report finds that the adoption of Salesforce and Slack have increased by 55 percent and 47 percent respectively in just one year, showing the popularity of collaborative platforms. Both of these are cloud-based applications.

In addition to these tools, Google’s G Suite has reached 33 percent adoption rate, up from 25 percent in 2018. While Google has grown, its growth has slowed down. Despite Google’s gains, Microsoft Office 365 still reigns as the cloud productivity suite of choice with a 79% adoption rate.

Many industries have implemented infrastructure as a service (IaaS) benefit in various ways. This includes mitigating the need for costly, on-premises IT infrastructure to being able to scale with the click of a button. The most popular of these services is Amazon’s AWS. The types of sectors using AWS include technology, media, telecommunications, education and non-profits.

Taking the leading cloud adopting sector – technology, since 2018, technology has leaped from 22 percent AWS adoption to 32 percent. Technology is also the leading adopter of Slack (79 percent) and the third largest user of G Suite (49 percent).

Despite the wide adoption, the technology sector has a low SSO take-up (education is the lead sector for introducing this security measure). SSO remains the primary security tool that organizations employ in order to authenticate users.
