Thurman, who is unbeaten in 26 fights since turning pro in 2007 is set to face Shawn Porter on March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut to defend his WBA welterweight title.
The 27-year-old Florida native is coming off a technical decision win over Luis Collazo to retain his WBA title following his unanimous decision win against Robert Guerrero last March 7 in Tampa, Florida.
Thurman has been eyeing a lucrative fight against Floyd Mayweather prior to his retirement fight against Haitian-American Andre Berto last year but Mayweather downplayed his challenge saying Thurman isn’t on his level yet and should instead consider Errol Spence — Mayweather’s sparring partner — for his next fight. Now Thurman is on the lookout for a financially rewarding fight and if he wins over Porter in their upcoming fight, he could be in contention for a lucrative fight with either Brook of Khan.
“Style-wise, Canelo is not a hard fight for Khan. [Canelo is] flat-footed, he tends to be slow-handed,” Thurman told Michelle Joy Phelps’ Behind The Gloves.
“Kell Brook has a very accurate jab, an accurate straight right hand, he’s 147lbs, he moves faster with his hands and his feet, and has a similar defensive style. They both stand up straight with their hands vertically,” said Thurman, who is noted for his punching power.
“Style-wise, Brook is more challenging due to his athleticism, due to the output he is able to produce in a fight. Canelo fights at a much slower pace but does have heavy hands which is quite threatening for a fighter like Khan,” he added.
Thurman, who won 22 of his 26 pro fights by way of knockout, is bent on challenging Brook should he wins impressively against Porter.
