article imageVancouver Canucks home sellout streak ends at 474 - narrowly

By Marcus Hondro     Oct 20, 2014 in Sports
The Vancouver Canucks had quite the sellout streak going but it ended Saturday night. The game against the Tampa Bay Lightning marked the first time the Canucks did not sell out a regular season game in 474 games, a streak dating back to Nov. 14, 2002.
The Canucks did not miss extending the streak by much as attendance for the game was 18,647, just 223 shy of a 475th consecutive sellout. Back in November of 2002 when the streak started they won that game 3-2 over the Los Angeles Kings; this time, to end it, they lost 4-2 to Tampa.
There are two still with the club who played in the game to start the streak and the game Saturday that ended it. Canuck fans will correctly guess that those players are Henrik and Daniel Sedin. The then-22-year-olds were in their third NHL season when the streak began. Trevor Linden also played in that game — he's now the Canuck's president. Other notables at the time include Markus Naslund, Brendan Morrison and Dan Cloutier.
As with virtually all streaks, empty seats could be seen at Canuck games, especially last year as the team underperformed, but on paper teams can call the game a sellout if a full number of tickets are spoken for.
The longest sellout streak in pro sports belongs to baseball's Boston Red Sox. The Sox sold-out 820 straight games from May of 2003 until April of 2013 (that includes postseason, their number is 794 when it comes to just regular-season games). The Portland Trailblazers of the NBA had a regular season streak of 744 straight games that ended in the 90s.
The Canucks were getting close to the longest recorded sellout streak in the history of the NHL: the Colorado Avalanche sold out 487 games from November of 1995 until October of 2006.
The Canucks will have to settle for second best.
