article imageTiger Woods rusty in return to PGA Tour

By Larry Seely     Jun 26, 2014 in Sports
Bethesda - Tiger Woods returned to action on Thursday after back surgery had the former number one golfer on the shelf since March. Woods struggled in his opening round at Congressional Country Club, shooting a 3-over par 74, eight shots behind the leader.
Tiger was rusty early, making just one birdie and making seven bogeys over his first 12 holes, but rallied late, making three birdies over his last six to shoot a respectable score in his return.
The time off was evident around the greens as he failed to convert on missed greens in regulation. Off the tee was a different story as Woods hit 9 of 14 fairways on the tough layout.
Greg Chalmers is the leader in the clubhouse after the opening round after a solid 66 on Thursday. Ricky Barnes and Freddie Jacobson both had 67's to tie for second place.
Tiger will have some work ahead if he plans on making the cut as Woods is tied for 84th position, but the confidence he gained over the last few holes and his practice routine after the round could have him in good shape for more holes over the weekend, something he will need heading into the Open Championship next month.
