Tecate buys $5.6 million sponsorship in Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

Top Rank Promotions president Todd duBoef said that the five sponsors bought a total of $13.2 million worth of ads in the weekend boxing event with Tecate buying almost half of the amount.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be shown on live feeds to TV viewers from around the world and will be available on pay-per-view in the U.S. and other countries.

The bout dubbed “Fight of the Century” is expected to generate more than $300 million in revenues with Mayweather getting 60 percent of the purse while Pacquiao will get 40 percent share.

As the main sponsor, the Tecate brand will also be featured in advertising materials and in prime poster and billboard spots in and out of Las Vegas.

“We killed it, we blew it out of the water,” said Top Ranks Promotions’ Lucia McKelvey. According to ESPN, the Top Rank executive vice president of marketing worked with Bruce Binkow of Mayweather Promotions to make arrangement for the deal.

For his part, Tecate brand director Gustavo Guerra said Tecate which originated in Mexico and named after one of Mexico’s tourist towns, had been associating the famous beer with boxing

“We have been sponsoring boxing since 2007 so we have been associating ourselves with boxing and been waiting for so many years for a fight like this,” Guerra said.

“We know in the past we have had great fights but nothing is going to be compared to what is already called the fight of the century. We wanted to increase our brand awareness and we will achieve it with this fight,” he added.

The four other sponsors include: Paramount Pictures/Skydance Productions, Mexican Tourism Board and Smart Communications of the Philippines with Top Rank/Mayweather Promotions contributing with $1 million minimum bid.
