article imageTeam Canada whips Norway 3-1 in first Olympic test, Price in goal

Sochi - It was expected Team Canada, with a powerhouse line-up of NHL stars, would beat Norway in each country's first game at the 2014 Sochi Olympics Thursday, and that's what they did. Norway fought hard but Canada's 3-1 win was convincing.
Norway played a tight checking game in the first period and the result was a sluggish, and scoreless, opening 20 minutes. In the second Canada found its legs, and found a way to open it up and use their superior speed, and went up 2-0 on goals by Shea Weber and Jamie Benn.
Both goals were to the stick side of Norwegian goalie Lars Haugen, Weber's a scintillating blast from the point to open the scoring at 6:20 of the second, Benn's a wrist shot from in close nine minutes later at 15:19. In the third Drew Doughty scored stick side, making it 3-1. That goal all but ended out what hope Norway had after scoring at 22 seconds of the third when Mathis Olimb's shot hit Patrick Thoresen to break Carey Price's shutout bid.
Thoresen, 30, is one of only two Norwegian players with a bona-fide NHL pedigree, having played over 100 games in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers before moving to the KHL five seasons ago. The other, 26-year-old Mats Zuccarello, is a strong contributor to the New York Rangers and has 15 goals this season.
Sidney Crosby did not register a point for Canada while Patrice Bergeron was the game's only player with multiple points, assisting on both first period goals. Canada plays Austria Friday, at the same time (noon EST); Roberto Luongo is expected to get the start in goal.
