The announcement did not say who will Mayweather face as his opponent for the May 2 weekend boxing event, which coincides with the holding of festivities to commemorate the Mexican independence day.
Fight fans have waited for Mayweather to make an official announcement of his fight against Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao during the tip off of the NBA All-Star Game last Sunday at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
But Mayweather said the fight contract has not yet been signed by him or Pacquiao contrary to reports that Pacquiao had already signed his part of the contract.
“I haven’t signed yet, and he hasn’t signed yet, you know,” said Mayweather in a courtside interview at the Madison Square Garden. “It’s just been speculations and rumors. But hopefully we can make the fight happen,” he added.
On his Twitter page, Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times believes that an announcement is possible as early as Thursday this week.
ESPN’s Dan Rafael says the fight talks could still drag on for a couple of days, citing the Mayweather-Maidana fight was finalized on or about February 24 for their first May 2 fight.
Considering this precedence, Mayweather could be announcing the fight officially in less than a week.
