Mayorga ((31-9-1, 25 KO), took a shot to the liver and failed to beat the count. He later complained that the knockdown was caused by a foul shot but the video clearly showed that it was a legal punch.
Mosley (48-9-1) is coming off a long layoff since losing to Anthony Mundine in 2013 via a referee technical decision as Mosley was unable to continue due to back spasms.
“All the fans wanted to see me fight,” Mosley said. “I’m glad I was able to put a fight on for them. I have the speed and the power. Look out, I’m coming,” Mosley said after the fight.
“I think I was a C-plus, but I can do better,” he added.
“I think this was a good fight for me,” Mosley said. “I knew after the first punch that it was going to be a knockout. Mayorga was tough.”
Mosley admitted that he was staggered by Mayorga with some solid shots but he came up with his own had counters.
“He staggered me a few times,” Mosley admitted. “I could feel the weight in his punches. He weighed in around 166 pounds but he was probably 180 pounds tonight,” Mosley said.
Mosley and Mayorga fought for the first time in 2008 with Mosley winning by KO at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
At 43, Mosley hopes to do a couple of fights before retiring. Mosley has fought elite fighters in the welterweight division including Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margaito. Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
With the win, Mosley improved is record to 48-9-1 while Mayorga’s own career record dropped to 31-1-9.
