Morris cleared 4.82 meters on her first attempt. She went on to try 4.87 meters once but failed, and subsequently raised the bar to 4.92 meters, where she was unsuccessful. As a result, Morris finished in second place behind Greek pole vaulter Katerina Stefanidi.
On a personal note, her boyfriend, Tyrone Smith, popped the question to her. Smith is a professional long jumper who was a finalist at the 2012 Olympic Games, and a finalist at the 2015 World Championships. This was quite the surprise since he surprised her being at the stadium first and foremost, let alone the marriage proposal. Morris confirmed this news via her official Twitter page.
A few weeks ago, on August 18, Morris won the IAAF Diamond League event in Birmingham. She is the world leader in the women’s pole vault this outdoor season with 4.95 meters, which is five centimeters short of her personal best (five meters).
Overall, Sandi Morris may not have taken home the Diamond League trophy, but she took home a real “diamond” in the form of a ring. It is safe to say that this Diamond League event will indeed be a special moment for Morris and for Tyrone Smith.
