article imageReview: Olympian Mark Schultz soars on new 'Foxcatcher' book Special

By Markos Papadatos     Dec 13, 2014 in Sports
Mark Schultz' "Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother's Murder, John du Pont's Madness, and the Quest for Olympic Gold" was released on November 18.
It was co-written by award-winning journalist David Thomas. Mark Schultz is a motivational speaker, 1984 Olympic gold medalist, two-time world champion and seven-time national champion in wrestling.
The book deals with Mark and David Schultz' wrestling careers and their aspirations to win the coveted Olympic gold medal, all told through the eyes of Mark. The author really delves into the conscience of John du Pont and his motives for the crime, as well as his mental illness. Schultz also gives the reader an insight look of his complex relationship with his older brother, David.
Without giving too much away, one can tell that Schultz really poured his heart into this literary work, and it shows. He is not afraid to showcase his vulnerability as a writer and athlete, and for the duration of the book, it feels like he is ripping his heart out, handing it to his readers, thus allowing them to hold it for the entire time. There are moments, where one will need a Kleenex or two.
The Verdict
Overall, Mark Schultz' Foxcatcher book is raw, authentic and powerful. It is a fantastic autobiography from start to finish, and it can be read in one or two sittings, since it will be difficult to put down. My suggestion is to read the book first before seeing the motion picture (starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum), since it will give the reader a greater appreciation for it, and it will subsequently allow the viewer to see things from a different perspective. David Thomas and Mark Schultz deserve a round of applause for a job well done. The book garners an A rating.
