Santiago - Remember the ordeal of the 33 miners who were trapped for 70 days in the San José copper mine in northern Chile in 2010? They came together again to film a moving video in support of Chile’s national soccer team playing in the World Cup Brazil 2014.
With the purpose of supporting their country’s national soccer team participating in the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, the thirty-three miners gathered again in the desert of Atacama to film an inspirational video where they recall their ordeal and compare it with the difficult task that will face the Chilean national soccer team in the group stage of the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Chile will compete in Group B with Spain, Australia and the Netherlands for a place in the knockout stage. The ad is sponsored by a Chilean bank.
Recalling their own hardships which demanded great strength and perseverance to overcome incredibly difficult odds, Mario Sepulveda, one of the leaders of the miners, delivers an enthusiastic and emotional discourse with the theme "nothing is impossible". In his speech, Sepulveda vehemently urges Chile’s soccer team to overcome obstacles, endure adversities, and come out on top.
The above video is in Spanish, but this is the translation of Sepulveda’s speech on behalf of his fellow miners urging the players to emulate their sacrifice and surmount all difficulties:
“Here we were trapped for seventy days. We had been swallowed by earth. It was here where we had to show what we were made of. We knew that there were millions of Chileans who believed in us, and this soil is witness to all that. So, we will take this soil to Brazil, to the field where our selection will play, to fill it with hope and courage, and to show the world that for a Chilean nothing is impossible. Spain is difficult; Holland is difficult. We are not afraid of the “group of death”. We do not care about death, because we have defeated death before!"
