The song was written by Lito Camo, who Pacquiao has collaborated with before, and recorded in the Philippines in February days before he flew to Los Angeles to start working there with his trainer, Freddie Roach. The Pacman released it on Facebook and sings it in his native tongue; it’s not intended for English speakers but for his country.
How do we know it’s for his country? Well, the title, ‘I am Going to Fight for Filipinos (Lalaban Ako Para Sa Filipino), kind of gives it away. And if it didn’t the lyrics would. The do not mention Floyd Mayweather but are instead very patriotic and sure to bring tears to the eyes of many back home.
Here’s some of them translated: “We are going to fight, I am going to fight for the world, Fight for your name, I am Filipino, We are Filipino.” Another touching verse goes “Even if my heart aches, its nothing to me as long as people from my country show their smiles and feel happy.”
The video has shots of Pacquiao training and Pacquiao in the ring, pounding his opponents. Those shots are mixed with video of Filipinos, adoring fans along with footage of the aftermath of a typhoon that hit the country n 2014. There is footage of Pacquiao helping provide disaster relief to victims.
Pacquiao the Renaissance Man will use the song for his walkout to the ring on May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas when he meets rival Mayweather. The music video is almost five minutes long.
