article imageRay Rice reinstated to NFL as judge throws out suspension

By Marcus Hondro     Nov 28, 2014 in Sports
Former Baltimore running back Ray Rice won his appeal of his indefinite suspension today and is eligible to get back to the NFL playing field. Rice was suspended for striking his then-fiance, now wife, Janay, knocking her out. It was captured on video.
Judge Barbara Jones said she did not agree with the claim made by the NFL when they raised his two-game suspension to an indefinite suspension. The NFL had said that Mr. Rice had not divulged all the details of the night he struck Janay in an elevator in a casino and then dragged her unconscious body out into the hall.
"I am not persuaded that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview," Judge Jones said. "I find that the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and must be vacated."
For his part, the 27-year-old Rice has admitted how terribly wrong his actions were and said he will forever have to live with them, and live with the realty that one day he will have to explain the events of that night to their 2-year-old daughter. Mr. Rice said the person that hit Janay is not the real Ray Rice. He made a wide-reaching apology after Judge Jones' decision was released.
"I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisors, family, friends and fans - but most importantly, my wife Janay," he said. "I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions. I am thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes."
The next step for Rice is to find a team to play for. He was let-go by the Baltimore and may now sign with any NFL team that wants him. As for the Ravens, Rice has filed a wrongful termination grievance against his former team.
The NFL acknowledged that Rice is re-instated and may sign with any club who offers him a contract.
