Philippines bags four world boxing titles after KO win by Tapales

Tapales joins three other Filipino world titlists who are reigning champions in three different divisions. They include Nonito Donaire, who is the WBO super bantamweight titleholder, Donnie Nietes, the WBO and Ring Light Flyweight champion and Johnriel Casimero, the reigniung IBF Flyweight titlist.

While Tapales appears competitive over the highly-favored veteran Thai champion in the first four rounds, he got a series of body shots from Sor Singyu, sending him to the canvas in the fifth round.

Tapales survived the round and it was his turn to deliver his own power shot that sent Sor Singyu down in the sixth round with a big right hook.

Sor Singyu appeared badly hurt as he was seen slowing down in the later rounds. By the tenth round Sor Singyu was a picture of a beaten fighter and Tapales wasted no time in the succeeding round to end the fight with a big left hook to the chin sending the Thai champ down for the count.

Tapales earned a mandatory title shot against Sor Singyu after knocking out previously unbeaten Shohei Omori last December at the Shimazu Arena, Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan.

The Omori-Tapales fight was a WBO bantamweight title eliminator. Omori is unbeaten in 15 pro fights while Tapales is a veteran of 27 fights with two defeats in his pro career at the time of their elimination bout. Read more

With the win, Tapales, who is managed and promoted by Rex “Wakee” Salud improved his career record to 29-2-0 while Sor Sinyu dropped to 52-4-0. The victory was Tapales’ eighth since losing to David Sanchez of Mexico in 2012.
