Pacquiao sparmate Jorge Linares wants to unify lightweight belt

Linares (40-3-0, 27 KOs), who accompanied trainer Freddie Roach to Baguio City in the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao in 2011, has been unstoppable in the ring with nine straight wins since losing to Sergio Thompson in 2012.

On Sept. 24, Linares will go for his 10th successive victory over Crolla and become the unified lightweight champion of the world if he wins.

Linares is coming off a knockout win over Ivan Cano of Mexico last year. After his loss to Antonio de Marco in 2011 and to Thompson the following year, Linares has improved tremendously as he won over seven out of his nine opponents by way of knockout.

The 31-year-old Venezuelan has fought once in the UK where he knocked out Kevin Mitchell last year at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London.

“It’s my second time in the UK, and I really enjoy fighting here. The UK has some of best boxing fans and it’s always great to come out and perform for them in the packed arenas,” Linares said.

“Crolla and I have similar styles, there’s lots of respect between us and we’re working very hard because I know it’s going to be a tough fight. But I want to win those belts and be the unified lightweight champion of the world. I am ready for the challenge and ready to claim my crown.” he added.

But on Sept. 24, Linares will have a tough fight against Crolla, who also won seven out of his 10 fights since losing to Gary Sykes in 2012, Crolla (38-4-0, 13 KOs) is still unbeaten since his loss to Sykes as he ended up in a draw on three of his 10 fights.

Crolla, who is putting his WBA Lightweight title on the line said he looks forward to having the three belts remain in Manchester when the fight is over.

“The Arena is going to be rocking and that’s my house, and I want to keep those three belts in Manchester. We’re working so, so hard in the gym because Jorge Linares is a phenomenal fighter, and I’m honoured to be fighting him in my house.”

Both fighters are almost evenly matched. Linares is 31 while Crolla is 29 years old. Crolla stands 5’9″ and Linares is an inch shorter at 5’8.” They’re both orthodox fighters.
