Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz defends drug fine proposal

Koncz has been heavily criticized by Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions after he announced that Mayweather has rejected the terms of the proposed $5 million penalty for a failed drug test.

The proposed penalty is designed to compensate the offended party especially if the fight is called off as a result of the failed test.

“Again, it makes perfect sense to me to have a monetary compensation for the party that’s affected by the testing,” he told Philstar.com.

Ellerbe balked at Koncz’s proposal saying Pacquiao’s camp should have raised the issue during the contract negotiations for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

The contract has been signed by the parties about a month ago and Ellerbe is surprised why Koncz is raising the issue now that the fighters are almost halfway to their training for the upcoming fight.

Ellerbe believes that the issued has been raised by Koncz to get positive media mileage for the Pacquiao camp as no less than Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is not supporting the extra fine as proposed by Koncz, saying that Pacquiao stands to get more if Mayweather is found positive for banned substances.

But Koncz emphasized that the offended party will not get outright compensation because the penalty will go the the state sanctioning body.

“If somebody tests positive the commission will take action. They will fine the individual and the fine goes to the commission,” he said .

“It doesn’t go to the fighter. And the drug-testing company has the right to suspend somebody for a period of up to four years if he tests positive,” he added.

Koncz cited the case of Brandon Rios, who was found positive for banned substance after the fight but Pacquiao did not get any compensation.

“Brandon Rios tested positive after the fight and the commission suspended him for four or six months and fined him but there was no benefit to Manny,” said Koncz.

Koncz criticized Mayweather for his advocacy to clean the sport but refuses to commit himself by rejecting the terms of the proposed penalty.
