Neophyte Philippine senator Manny Paquiao met with Kerwin Espinosa, a suspected drug lord Friday at the headquarters of the Philippine National Police a few hours after Esoinosa arrived from Abu Dhabi where he sought refuge for several weeks.
Espinoza has been tagged by the Philippine National Police (PNP) as one of the top drug lords operating in Eastern Visayas area in Central Philippines.
Espinoza's father, Albuera town mayor Rolando Espinoza was arrested and killed inside his prison cell in Albuers town reportedly by elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), an intelligence unit of the PNP.
Before he flew in from Abu Dhabi, Espinosa sought an audience with Pacquiao saying he trusted the senator for his fairness and dedication to his job as lawmaker.
Pacquiao has earlier in the week castigated the judge who issued the warrant of arrest to Espinoza's father who was already in detention when the arrest warrant was served by the police.
Before his arrival in Manila, Espinosa denied reports that he is the drug lord of Eastern Visaayas, saying he used to be involved on drugs but not as the top drug lord.
"I was involved with drugs before. But I am not a drug lord in Eastern Visayas," Espinosa said.
"I sold drugs before, but I have stopped," he added.
Espinosa, who is now booked at the PNP Custodial House, is set to submit to authorities an affidavit that may contain a list of top drug lords and other people involved in illegal drugs in the Philippines.
Pacquiao has been supportive of President Rodrigo Duterte's ongoing campaign to stop the proliferation of illegal drugs in the Philippines.
