Pacquiao confident of winning in 2016 senatorial election

This was the gist of his conversation with promoter Bob Arum when they met in New York on Oct. 13, after Pacquiao was honored by the Asia Society as the “2015 Game Changer of the Year” in a ceremony at United Nations headquarters.

“I’m telling you what he told me last week at dinner in New York,” Arum said. “We talked very seriously, and he said, ‘Bob, hopefully, by the middle of May I will have been elected senator in the Philippines, and at that point I cannot engage in boxing because I need to focus on the senate and I have to be in attendance,’ Arum told ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

“Manny told me this fight on April 9 will be his last fight,” said Arum, who is putting up a new list of possible opponents for Pacquiao’s next fight.

Pacquiao’s winning mode in the ongoing senatorial contest is traceable to a recent poll rating by Pulse Asia placing him in the No.8 spot of the Top 12 winners.

Pacquiao, who has filed his Certificate of Candidacy last Oct. 16, will be resuming his training before the end of the year for his fight on or before April 9 2016.

Earlier, Arum bared his shortlist which include Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Terence Crawford, Lucas Matthyssee and Juan Manuel Marquez.

From this list, only Crawford and Brook are still in contention as Khan has opted out of the ongoing talks while Marquez said he is no longer interested in a fifth fight with Pacquiao. In the case of Matthysse, his inclusion in the list ended when he lost to Viktor Postol last Oct. 3.

Arum’s new list now includes a rematch with Timothy Bradley provided he wins over Pacquiao’s former foe Brandon Rios next month.

Terence Crawford is now viewed as Pacquiao’s next foe following his impressive win against Canadian Dierry Jean last Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
