Crawford and Postol are both unbeaten in their pro careers with 28 wins each. Crawford defended his WBO light welterweight title against Hank Lundy last February via TKO at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Postol has likewise defended his WBC light welterweight title for the first time after his KO win over Lucas Matthysse at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. last October.
It is going to be a tough match for Postol, who has a low knockout rating of 43 percent compared to Crawford’s remarkable 71 percent rating.
But Postol’s trainer Freddie Roach is confident Postol will emerge victorious over Crawford on fight night.
“I really like him. He’s not popular in America at the moment, although his fight with Terence will be showcased on American television. Victor is a great fighter, a good athlete. And I truly feel he will win this fight. Even though it’s going to be a very tough fight, I believe we’re going to finish it on top. Personally, I am very excited,” Roach said.
Roach is particularly worried about Crawford’s speed but he said it will be a point of concentration as they go about their strategy during the training for the upcoming fight.
“This fight was the best opportunity out there. Terence is very fast, and that’s exactly what we need to overcome – his speed. We’re going to focus on that in the gym. In general, Crawford is a very good boxer, but so is Postol and I think my guy is walking out the winner that night,” Roach added.
While Postol isn’t particularly known as a knockout artist, he has remained unbeaten because of his punching accuracy which enables him to win fights on points.
But Postol’s ability to land on target with precision may not work with fast moving target like Crawford who moves around quickly with his foot and hand speed.
With Roach by his side in the next seven weeks in their training camp, Postol should be able to come up with a fight plan that would address Crawford’s speed and power.
Postol need not go for a KO win because his chances there aren’t good, but a well thought-out plan geared toward winning the fight on points could end Crawford’s 28-fight winning streak.
