article imageOp-Ed: Why Pacquiao should refrain from fighting above 147 pounds limit

By Leo Reyes     Nov 10, 2016 in Sports
Longtime promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach have lately been entertaining the idea of allowing Manny Pacquiao to fight either Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin despite their huge advantage in size, reach and weight.
Both Alvarez and Golovkin are on top of their boxing careers and obviously Arum and Roach are motivated by a huge payday for Pacquiao in a match with these popular middleweight fighters.
Boxing insiders are hoping that Arum and Roach are not serious with their plan to put Pacquiao in front of two giant middleweight fighters because if they are serious, they will be risking Pacquiao's health.
Unless Pacquiao fights for a full middleweight for his ninth division world title, he will accomplish nothing in terms of breaking his own record as the only fighter in history to win titles in eight different weight classes.
Pacquiao has already proven his worth in the middleweight division when he fought Antonio Margarito in 2010. Everyone saw him fight a giant in the ring dominating the towering Mexican-American enroute to a unanimous decision win. It was his eight win in as many weight classes.
Pacquiao was in the early 30's and was on his prime when he fought Margarito and putting him in front of the middleweight giants would be unimaginable considering his inferior body frame and advancing age.
Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was vocal about the plan of Arum and Roach saying they want him to get killed.
"I said that the most that Manny could make was 145 pounds [for Vargas]. He couldn't even make 145 pounds and they want to put him in with Canelo, with Golovkin . They want to get him killed," said Chavez Sr.
Chavez' advice to Pacquiao is for him to retire now and enjoy his blessings but he recognized that Pacquiao is still in top form and still giving the fans the fights that they have always been wanting to see.
"I think he should already say goodbye to boxing, that's the truth, but he did always give us good times," Chavez Sr. added.
If Arum and Roach are serious about the Canelo or Golovkin match, they will regret seeing Pacquiao manhandled by either of these two middleweight giants. Pacquiao fans and supporters will never forgive them.
But everyone knows Arum and Roach are just hyping Pacquiao's next fight and the truth is they care and love Pacquiao so much that they won't risk his life in favor of the huge sum the fight will generate.
