Op-Ed: Why Nonito Donaire needs one more tune up bout before title fight

While Donaire scored two successive knockout wins in his last two outings, his victories were predictable because of the quality of his opponents.

After his TKO loss to Walters last year, Donaire fought William Prado of Brazil for his first tune up fight. The bout ended with Donaire winning by TKO in the second round.

The early stoppage robbed Donaire of the opportunity to test his power and endurance following his decision to move down to the next lower weight limit. Had the fight reached the late rounds, he would have gained more knowledge of the effect of his weight downswing.

While Prado could have put up a better fight, Donaire was far too smart in the ring for the Brazilian fighter.

Part of Donaire’s preparation for another shot at a major world title, his promoter gave him another untested challenger in Anthony Settoul of France, who was visibly amateurish and seemingly unprepared for what Donaire had in store for him.

Again Donaire failed to put to test the adjustments that he and his father-trainer have labored to get him in top shape for another title fight.

Just like Prado, the Frenchman was done and out in the second round. Again, Donaire failed to test whatever adjustments he was trying to do in preparation for a more demanding title fight.

It now appears Donaire needs one more tune-up fight just to be sure that he gets the desired level of power and endurance that he needs in another career-defining title fight.

Donaire has been eyeing a title fight against Scott Quigg of England, who is unbeaten in his pro boxing career. Quigg is a tough opponent and Donaire needs to be well prepared for what Quigg has in store for him.

Quigg is coming off a TKO win against Spain’s Kiko Martinez and was reported to be interested in facing Donaire late this year.

Donaire’s other possible opponents include Carl Frampton of Ireland and Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba. But whoever Donaire fights, he needs to be in top shape and to be sure that he gets adjusted again to his renewed fighting weight.
