Op-Ed: Why no one believes Floyd Mayweather is staying retired

Mayweather said the question is old and has been asked over and over again. Every time he is asked of the same question his answer is he will remain retired and to the last question in a latest interview, the answer is still the same.

But why do sports writers ask the same question every time he engages them in an interview? The answer is obvious, as his body language says otherwise. Recently, he also said he may fight again if the price is right.

“As of now, I’m happy with being retired,” Mayweather said. “A lot of fighters have to box. I don’t have to box. I don’t get the urge to go to the boxing gym. My urge is giving back to the sport now, helping [promote] the young fighters.

But in a recent event where he talked about his successful boxing career after receiving another “Fighter of the Year” award from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), he surprised everyone in attendance with a revelation about his career path.

“For the right price, I may come back.” said Mayweather

Yet he sounds bored when asked of the same question; but seemingly he wants the media to keep asking him of the same question — probably to gain more media mileage for a potential rematch against Manny Pacquiao, who is set to face Jessie Vargas to regain his WBO welterweight championship belt.

In May 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao fought at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight generated 4.6 million pay-per-view (PPV) buys valued at over $500 million in revenues including gate receipts and other sales income. The huge revenue generated by the fight broke all PPV records in boxing history.

While the proposed rematch may not generate the same amount of revenue, boxing insiders say the rematch would generate at least half of the PPV buys it made in May last year. At half of the revenue, the proposed rematch would still be the second highest-grossing PPV buys in boxing history.

One competitor who believes Mayweather will continue fighting is Canelo Alvarez, who is facing Liam Smith on Sept. 17 at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.

“Oh I think Floyd Mayweather will fight again. Mayweather thrives in the spotlight so much it will happen,” Canelo exclusively told World Boxing News.

As long as Mayweather engages media to talk about the sport, he can rest be assured that the same question will always crop up. The best thing to do is just to say that he is indeed considering a possible return but doesn’t exactly know when it will happen.
