Op-Ed: Why Mayweather should be afraid to fight Pacquiao

Mayweather should be concerned when in the “Philly Shell/high shoulder roll” that if Pacquiao finds a way to angle his body, that every punch is coming from a perceived injustice and lack of respect for him and his people. That Pacquiao might feel like David when he beat Goliath or Buster Douglas when he beat Mike Tyson for his mother who passed away days earlier. It was not supposed to happen but it did. Floyd is not talking and his father has adopted the same philosophy. Strange indeed.

DigitalJournal reports: “Normally, a southpaw fighter would find an orthodox fighter an easy target. But in the case of Mayweather, it may not work naturally because he moves constantly which makes it a bit difficult for a southpaw fighter to hit him. While Mayweather had won fights against southpaw opponents in the past, he may find Pacquiao a different breed of southpaw fighter because he combines left and right hand power punches which will make it very difficult for Mayweather to put up his own defense using the shoulder roll defense. Mayweather could be overwhelmed by Pacquiao’s rapid fire with left and right had power combinations that could make him vulnerable to a lethal left hand power shot by Pacquiao.”

These memories for many are not new and easily identified when in past years there were many names for every race from the Irish to the Italians and the African Americans and when an insult occurred a punch was thrown in the streets or on the docks or where ever until we all got even footing in the new world. The Mayweather family can tell you a story about their struggles as well. The only wealth that came in this era was knowledge of boxing passed down from the original warriors to Floyd Jr, the gifted next generation.

Pacquiao has, besides his boxing skills, the weapon of silence. Of keeping his feelings to himself and not gloating. He is an avenger. When fun was made of Freddie Roach and his handicaps before the Brandon Rios fight Pacquiao gave Rios a beating and said little about why or how but simply carried out his mission. For all of us that have endured the N-word long before it was fashionable to cry out on subway cars in New York City our great champions spoke the best replies. Same for Manny Pacquiao who now has his chance to answer a bigger question than whether he used steroids.

TheGulfNews reports: He said his ambitions transcend boxing as he considers the sport a vehicle in his pursuit of a life-long passion to help his countrymen. “I can’t resist the urge to help,” he said. “It’s in my system. I want the Filipino people to always remember that Manny Pacquiao always fought for them, for the people.”

There is no disputing the fact Floyd Mayweather is a great and gifted fighter. Those words cannot be attributed to many. When the great and gifted look back do they have an obligation to be silent about their skills and associated weaknesses of human nature.
