Op-Ed: Why Kell Brook could suffer first career defeat against GGG

Golovkin, who currently holds four major world titles, is one of the most feared boxers in the middleweight division having knocked out 32 of his 35 opponents since turning pro in 2006.

Brook is the current IBF welterweight champion and fresh off a TKO win against Kevin Bizier in March to retain his IBF title.

Both fighters are unbeaten in their pro careers after engaging 36 foes each in their professional career. Golovkin has a 91 percent knockout rate, while Brook has a knockout rating of 69 percent.

The Golovkin-Brook fight caught boxing fans by surprise when Golovkin’s promoter suddenly announced the consummation of the fight contract with Brook despite a nearly done deal with former WBA interim middleweight titlist Chris Eubank, Jr.

In his Twitter post, Eubank said he hasn’t seen a contract since his planned fight against Golovkin was announced.

“I haven’t been shown one contract since my fight with GGG was announced. I’m still ready & waiting to sign. Fighting Brook is a joke,” Eubank said.

Seemingly, the promoters could not agree on the fight purse as the reason why Goloivkin’s promoter made a quick decision to sign up with Brook’s camp.

While Brook is also undefeated in his pro career, records show that he isn’t in Golovkin’s level insofar as skill and punching power are concerned.

Before his pro debut in Germany in 2006, Golovkin finished his amateur competition with 345 victories with only five defeats.

Golovkin won gold medals in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and in 2003 World Championship in Bangkok. In 2004, he won another gold medal in Asian Championship held in Puerto Princesa in the Philippines. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Golovkin took the silver medal.

On top of his enviable record in both the amateur and pro, Golovkin has the most durable chin among middleweight fighters which is the reason why he has never been knocked down in his amateur as well as in his pro career.

Aside from his high percentage knockout rate, Golovkin has also dispatched more than half of his opponents in no more than four rounds. Out of his 35 opponents, only two survived the full 12 rounds.

While Brook has what it takes to pull off the upset following his nearly perfect knockout win streak since his majority decision win over Carson Jones in 2012, he may not survive Golovkin’s power.

Other than Shawn Porter, who served as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner and a couple worthy challengers, Brook has not been tested against elite fighters who are in Golovkin’s level.

Best option for Brook is to drag the fight to the late rounds and hope that Golovkin, who is four years his senior, tires out. But Brook needs to keep his distance to avoid Golovkin’s power shots while making sure that he wins on points in most of the rounds.

Still, it will take adequate preparation and strategy for Brook to even pull the upset against the highly-favored knockout artist from Kazakhstan.
