Op-Ed: Why Kell Brook won’t survive Gennady Golovkin’s punching power

Brook ( (36-0-0, 25 KOs) has been fighting at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds while Golovkin has ruled the 160 pounds middleweight limit for a couple of years. It will be Brook’s first fight at 160 pounds .

Golovkin (35-0-0, 32 KOs), who currently holds four major world titles, is one of the most feared boxers in the middleweight division having knocked out 32 of his 35 opponents since turning pro in 2006.

Brook is the current IBF welterweight champion and fresh off a TKO win against Kevin Bizier in March to retain his IBF title.

Both fighters are unbeaten in their pro careers. Golovkin has a 91 percent knockout rate, while Brook has a knockout rating of 69 percent.

Golovkin’s awesome punching power will be Brook’s nightmare come fight night. But Brook has a little choice at this time but to come up with a fight strategy that will address Golovkin’s punching power.

Golovkin is beatable even if he hasn’t experienced defeat in his pro career. In February last year, challenger Martin Murray showed Golovkin can be beaten with a good fight strategy. Murray took Golovkin to eleven rounds of competitive boxing. It was Golovkin’s longest fight ever in his pro career.

Despite his 11th round TKO loss, Murray has shown everyone how to deal with Golovkin’s punching power. Murray was almost successful in putting up a good defense against Golovkin by securing and protecting his head. With a little frustration about landing power shots to Murray’s head, Golovkin switched to body attack as he unleashed a big liver punch that sent Murray reeling in pain to the canvas.

In the Murray fight, it appears that Golovkin is vulnerable in the late rounds as he seemed to have slowed down a little bit but Murray was visibly tired after absorbing knockdowns early in the rounds.

Brook can improve on what Murray did but he needs to move quickly and maintain a safe distance to avoid Golovkin’s power shots in the early round. The idea is to drag the fight to the late rounds as Murray did. A good defense and a lot of movements will do the trick to frustrate Golovkin.

But Goliovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez has noticed that Brook opted to gain more weight to keep up with Golovkin’s 160 pounds fighting weight. Reports indicate that Brook has bulked to 176 pounds less than three weeks before the fight.

For Sanchez it could be disastrous for Brook to face Golovkin at that weight though he may be saying it as part of his fight strategy.

“You know there’s all kinds of ways to do this thing and they have 36 wins under their belt so they are obviously doing something right,” said Sanchez to Fighthub.com. “Yeah, if you ask me and I had Kell, yeah, that would be completely the wrong way but I’m not training Kell, I’m training Golovkin.” he added.

Sanchez could be preempting Brook’s handlers but he talks sense about Brook’s bulking to 176 pounds just a little over two weeks to the fight.

Extra or unnecessary poundage will prevent Brook from moving around the ring with ease and make him vulnerable to Golovkin’s power punches.
