Op-Ed: Why Horn can’t do what Marquez did to Pacquiao in 2012

In his fourth encounter with Pacquiao on December 8, 2012, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Marquez admitted he knew he would have been knocked out in the sixth or seventh round if not for the one power punch he unloaded that landed straight to Pacquiao’s mouth seconds before the end of the sixth round.

While it is true that Marquez and his trainer had planned the timing and the exact way in which it would be executed, such strategy is difficult to duplicate and execute as Rushton has planned.

“I believe Jeff can do what Marquez has done and actually do it a little bit better. The skill that Marquez used against Manny has been successful,” said Rushton. “I believe Jeff Horn has those abilities but he’s slightly bigger than Marquez and a little bit faster and just a little bit more technically proficient.”

Rushton is confident Horn will not just do what Marquez did but he said Horn can do better because he is faster and bigger. Rushton did not say that Horn is taller than Pacquiao which is one of the reasons why it would be difficult for him to do exactly what Marquez did.

It may be recalled that Marquez threw his power punch from a normal or natural angle because he and Pacquaio have the same height. It would be difficult for Horn to do the same because he has at least three inches height advantage over Pacquiao.

Rushton’s claim that Horn is faster than Marquez is debatable because the Mexican counter-puncher moves to find his comfortable angle based on his previous fights against Pacquiao. Horn should bear in mind that it is his first time to face Pacquiao in the ring. Marquez has accumulated a lot of knowledge of the way Pacquiao moves which is the reason why he got the perfect timing.

Admittedly Horn is still a greenhorn and they are miles apart in terms of skill and experience in the ring. Pacquiao has fought elite fighters in eight different weight classes with 68 fights to his credit since turning pro 22 years ago. Horn has only 16 fights in his pro career with only two opponents with experience in world championship fights.

“Manny is a complete fighter and he has proven that for many many years. We are not underestimating the challenge in front of us,” added Rushton “It’s going to be similar to the Marquez battles. It’s going to be intense. Of course, Jeff will get hit but he will bounce back and Manny will realize he is like Marquez, just coming at you.”

Rushton is definitely a good trainer but using the Marquez formula in trying to pull off the upset against Pacquiao on July 2 could have major repercussions because Horn isn’t Marquez and he simply could not copy overnight what Marquez did to Pacquiao in 2012.
