Op-Ed: Why Freddie Roach wants Mayweather for Pacquiao’s farewell fight

Pacquiao was suffering from a shoulder injury before and during his record breaking pay-per-view fight against Mayweather last year at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After reviewing the last Pacquiao-Bradley fight and comparing it to Pacquiao’s overall ring performance against Mayweather last last year, Roach has no doubt Pacquiao is fully healed and ready to face any tough opponent his promoter will put in front of him.

With Pacquiao’s convincing win over Bradley last April, Roach is confident the eight-division world champion will give Mayweather a good fight for the second time.

The reason why Roach is still hopeful of the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch is the reported Mayweather statement that he may consider fighting again.

“As of now, I’m happy with being retired,” Mayweather said. “A lot of fighters have to box. I don’t have to box. I don’t get the urge to go to the boxing gym. My urge is giving back to the sport now, helping [promote] the young fighters.

But in a recent event where he talked about his successful boxing career after receiving another “Fighter of the Year” award from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), he surprised everyone in attendance with a revelation about his career path.

“For the right price, I may come back.” said Mayweather, who talked about his recent business ventures and how successful they are. Read more:

The “right price” that Mayweather is referring to could be the possible rematch against Pacquiao because that is the only one that could generate the revenue that will satisfy his desired prize.

Mayweather’s statement about his possible comeback fight did not say when it is happening but his adviser Al Haymon said the unbeaten champ has not talked about fighting this year.

Pacquiao is set to face winner Terence Crawford-Viktor Postol fight which is taking place Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao’s return fight is tentatively set for Nov. 5 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
