article imageOp-Ed: Why Freddie Roach wants Marquez as Pacquiao's next foe

By Leo Reyes     Sep 29, 2015 in Sports
Manny Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum and adviser Michael Koncz want British fighter Amir Khan to be Pacquiao's next foe, but longtime trainer Freddie Roach prefers Juan Manuel Marquez because the Mexican is easier for Pacquiao to beat.
Obviously, the three big men behind Pacquiao's inspiring boxing career are not on the same page when it comes to the choice of Pacquiao's opponent.
Arum and Koncz seem to be rooting for Khan because they believe the British fighter will bring in more gate and pay-per-view revenues for the stakeholders.
"If Manny fights Khan, Khan will probably bring 3,000 or 4,000 people over from the U.K. for the fight," Arum said in a recent interview with ESPN.
"Amir Khan, I think, is the best choice for the fans, and (Kell) Brook is the second choice," added Koncz.
While Arum and Koncz seem to be concerned only about the financial viability of the fight, Roach offers a better alternative by picking Marquez.
Contrary to recent reports that Marquez is no longer interested to face Pacquiao in a rematch(fifth fight), Roach said Arum told him that Marquez still wants the fight.
"Well Bob (Arum) tells me he does. But out of those names, I want the easiest fight for Manny and we can get back on track. So I think he is the easiest opponent of those guys," Roach told Boxing Scene.
Roach has a good point in picking Marquez instead of Khan because he is confident that Pacquiao will beat Marquez.
In so far as pay-per-view (PPV) sales is concern, Marquez has a long history of PPV fights and has remain a PPV attraction in Mexico and the US.
The perennial Hall of Fame Trainer of the Year maintains that Pacquiao's knockout loss to Marquez in 2012 was nothing but a result of a lucky punch and carelessness on the part of Pacquiao.
A win by Pacquiao after his controversial loss to Mayweather would be a good morale booster for the Filipino boxer as he intends to remain active until his contract with Arum expires in 2016.
Roach did not say how Pacquiao will perform against Khan. But he definitely knows who is the better fighter between the two as he trained them both and watched them spar on several occasions.
