Op-Ed: Why Floyd Mayweather won’t be in top shape on fight night

The senior Mayweather was responding to a question from Jenna J of ontheropesboxing.com when he verbally attacked Ariza, saying he doesn’t know anything about boxing.

When asked if Ariza participates in Mayweather’s strength and conditioning and if it is different from what Mayweather has been doing, Floyd Sr said Ariza is a nobody and even called him “son of a bitch.”

“Strengthening him? That son of a bitch ain’t strengthening nobody. He ain’t nobody. He’s in there, I can’t say exactly what he’s doing but he ain’t strength training little Floyd. What Floyd’s doing everybody’s helping, it’s not just one person,” he said.

And when asked about Ariza’s participation in putting together a game plan, knowing that Ariza had been a former strength and conditioning coach of Pacquiao, Floyd Sr said Ariza knows nothing and does not know what to say to anyone.

“He don’t know shit anyways, he don’t know anything about no damn boxing, I do know that. I know he doesn’t know anything about boxing and he don’t know what to tell anyone anyways. If he does know anything, it’s some dirty shit and it’s something that nobody wants to use or hear about. Nobody is into that kind of mess,” he said.

Before joining Mayweather’s camp, Ariza worked with seven-time trainer of the year Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym, where he was introduced to Pacquiao.

During his stint as Pacquiao’s conditioning coach, Ariza became one of the most popular strength and conditioning coaches in boxing for having put Pacquiao in shape which helped in his record-breaking wins in eight different weight classes.

But Ariza’s popularity faded when he had a falling out with Roach over work-related issues. They parted ways in 2012 after Pacquiao’s devastating knockout loss to Mexican counter-puncher Juan Manuel Marquez.

Later, Roach found Ariza in the opposite corner of the ring during Pacquiao’s comeback fight against Brandon Rios in Macau China in 2013. Ariza was hired by trainer Robert Garcia as Rios’ strength and conditioning coach but after the Pacquiao fight, Garcia and Ariza also went separate ways.

Ariza landed on Mayweather’s lap when the unbeaten champ signed him up last September while he was training for the Maidana fight and negotiations for the Pacquiao fight was ongoing.

Floyd Sr’s disclosure of his apparent rift with Ariza could be a major distraction for Mayweather, who has barely two weeks to get in top shape for his May 2 ring encounter with Pacquiao.

It would be difficult for Mayweather to work with two opposing coaches who may not be in talking terms following Floyd Sr’s verbal attack on Ariza’s credibility as his son’s strength and conditioning coach.

So many insulting and offending statements have been said about Ariza’s credibility and while he has yet to react on Floyd Sr’s tirades, his reaction is expected to be harsher than the statements coming from Mayweather’s own father.

The next two weeks will be crucial for Mayweather and if this situation isn’t addressed properly, it will become major distraction for him in the remaining days of his training.

Boxing fans await what Mayweather will do to his two most important member of the team. Will he side with Ariza and fire his own father as his coach? Or will he try to diffuse the exploding situation by getting them together in a reconciliation talks?

Fans as well as members of Team Pacquiao await what Ariza has to say and what Mayweather will do to put order inside his training camp.
