article imageOp-Ed: Why Floyd Mayweather will beat Marcos Maidana

By Zachary Stallings     Aug 12, 2014 in Sports
Pound-for-Pound champion Floyd Mayweather could potentially have a much easier night than he did a few months ago against Marcos Maidana.
On May 3rd, 2014 Floyd Mayweather fought one of his toughest fights to date when he stepped into the ring with Marcos Maidana. Maidana pressed Mayweather, and put on a relentless offensive that seemed to have the pound-for-pound king off his game. Maidana made Mayweather fight-his-fight, and that played to his advantage, until Maidana made a mistake.
In the 6th round Maidana stopped attacking Mayweather's body, and that allowed Mayweather to create some separation and work from a distance. When Mayweather was able to back up and throw he found tremendous success with the right hand. Now Maidana was still putting on a relentless pursuit of the champion, but he was not finding the same success as he was when he was attacking the body.
Mayweather's speed, footwork, and amazing head movement may have been Maidana's undoing as many of the punches he threw, he missed. Now this was a very close fight, but in the end Mayweather's ability to make adjustments is what lead to him winning the fight and remain undefeated.
Now the reason for this second fight is simply because of how close the first fight was, but this time around it's going to be a much different fight.
Mayweather's major goal going into this fight is to make the first round, round one of a new fight, and not round 13 of a continuing battle.
This fight could end up a lot like Canelo vs Lara, but the major difference will be that Mayweather will land a lot more punches than Lara did.
Mayweather is not going to let Maidana get as close as he did in the last fight. Mayweather is going to keep Maidana at a distance with his jab, and that should set up his tremendous right hand that he was able to land very well in the last fight.
Mayweather is going to win this fight because of his boxing IQ. Mayweather already knows what to expect from Maidana, and he know's what he can and cannot do in the ring with him. If Mayweather can keep Maidana off of him and stay on the outside it could be a very easy night for the pound-for-pound king come September 13th.
