Op-Ed: Why first six rounds are critical for Pacquiao

Earlier, Pacquiao made known his plan to use his own version of speed and power, as he hopes to land a power shot that will force Mayweather to run.

Pacquiao admitted that he cannot tell how Mayweather will behave in the ring, particularly in the first half of the fight.

“We don’t know what he’ll do (in the ring). He may not run, or he may run,” Pacquiao said.

“If he gets hurt, he’ll run. If not he’ll possibly engage,” he added.

For sure, Pacquiao is hoping that Mayweather will engage him in a toe-to-toe fight because he knows that Mayweather is vulnerable as he gets easily rattled when attacked with lightning speed.

Unless confronted with rapid and sustained aggression, Mayweather would likely take his own time in the early rounds to gauge what Pacquiao has prepared for him and to feel his punching power by engaging in brief but safe offensive attacks

Usually in many of his previous fights, Mayweather keeps his cool in the early rounds to get himself familiar with his opponent’s fight strategy and for him to make adjustments on his original fight plan.

If Mayweather finds success with his defense in the first six rounds by neutralizing Pacquiao’s offensive assault, Mayweather’s chances of winning would be great especially if he is ahead on points in the first half.

Mayweather is hard to catch if he runs and if he continues to keep his distance it could frustrate Pacquiao until he realizes that it is too late for him to catch up.
