Estrada, who has been inactive for over a year since his TKO win against Hernan Marquez in September last year, made his debut at 115 pounds against Filipino challenger Ramond Tabugon in Mexico over the weekend with a unanimous decision win.
One of the reasons why Estrada gave up his unified flyweight belts was his difficulty in making the weight. according to WBO general secretary Jose Izquierdo II.
“Estrada formally vacated his WBO title on Sept. 13, citing that he could no longer make weight,” Izquierdo told ESPN.com.
But what appears to be the real reason for moving up is his desire to seek lucrative fights in the higher weight limit where some of the big fights can be secured.
Two of the big names in the 115 pounds limit could lead to a seven figure payday for Estrada. They include Gonzales and Carlos Cuadras, who was very competitive against Chocolatito in their recently-concluded fight.
It is premature though for Estrada to face Chocolatito in a rematch if he cannot show more than he did with Tubugon last Saturday. It seems he is still nursing his right hand injury and would need more time for complete healing.
While he won via a unanimous decision, it wasn’t the same Estrada that fans saw last weekend and if he gets a rematch against Chocolatito for his next fight, he could be in trouble.
Best thing to do for Estrada is to lure Cuadras for his next fight and if he wins, Chocolatito will have little choice but to give him a rematch.
