Op-Ed: Why Canelo-Khan fight can’t break Mayweather-Pacquiao PPV record

Prompted by his video artist James Dayap about Khan’s claim that the Alvarez-Khan fight will dwarf his PPV record, Mayweather threatened Khan with a PPV fight against unbeaten Danny Garcia to prove that even without Pacquiao, he can beat Canelo-Khan on PPV to coincide with Cinco de Mayo in another venue in Las Vegas.

“You know, it’s funny. My videographer, James Dayap, one of the best videographers in the world, came to me and said, ‘Floyd, look what they’re saying, trying to say that this fight is bigger than you and Pacquiao.” Mayweather said in an interview with FyteHype’s Ben Thompson.

Mayweather believes he can make life difficult for Canelo-Khan with a mere phone call to Danny Garcia’s father for a parallel fight on Cinco de Mayo in Las Vegas.

“You know, I can easily put a halt on that fight if I chose to call Mr. Garcia, [Danny] Garcia’s dad, if I chose to call him and say, ‘You know what, sir, you’re a hell of a trainer, you’re son’s a hell of a fighter, he’s an undefeated champion, I’m an undefeated champion, and I think it would be great for me and your son both to make a lot of money. And like I said before, you’re very outspoken, my dad is very outspoken; it would be good for me to come back for number 50 and fight the undefeated Danny Garcia, you know, at the MGM Grand,” Mayweather told FyteHype.

Mayweather is confident that Garcia, who knocked out Khan in July 2012 can deliver the goods with him to dominate the Canelo-Khan PPV numbers.

“You know, since Danny Garcia is undefeated and he’s very explosive, he’s a very good fighter, and he really represents Puerto Rico the same way that Trinidad dad. Even though he’s from Philadelphia, he represents the red, white, and blue for Puerto Rico. I’ll go over to the MGM Grand and say, ‘You know what? We need a venue also,’ and we’ll see,” Mayweather added.

Mayweather knows that no one can come near the PPV numbers that he and Pacquiao have made, not even the Canelo-Khan fight which is taking place on May 7 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight which took place in Las Vegas on May 2 last year, broke all PPV records in boxing history with 4.6 million buys valued at over $500 million including gate and other sales income.

If there is any fight that can dwarf the revenue generated by the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout, it would be their most-awaited rematch.

But it can only happen if Pacquiao scores knockout win or a very impressive performance over Bradley on April 9.

Pacquiao’s performance in the upcoming Bradley fight has so much to do with the rematch because it will address Pacquiao’s claim that he lost the fight due to his shoulder injury.

Boxing fans want to see Pacquiao in a rematch with Mayhweather on equal footing with two good hands working for him to dispel claims of injury as the reason for his loss.
