Op-Ed: Why boxing fans will buy Pacquiao-Vargas fight on PPV

Vargas is putting his WBO welterweight title on the line against Pacquiao on Nov. 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Both fighters are coming off impressive wins over their respective opponents with Pacquiao scoring two knockdowns en route to a unanimous decision win over Timothy Bradley last May and Vargas knocking out Sadam Ali to bag the WBO welterweight title earlier in March at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C.

One of the reasons why the fight will do good numbers on PPV has something to do with the claim by some members of the Pacquiao camp led by Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach that the fighting senator has regained his right hand power following his shoulder operation a few days after his loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Roach has stated that the reason Pacquaio lost to Mayweather is because he was then fighting with only one good hand which was the reason why Pacquiao had his right hand fixed right after the Mayweather fight.

Roach and conditioning coach Justin Fortune believe that Pacquiao’s old recurring injury has been fully addressed pointing to Pacquiao’s convincing win over Bradley last May. They both predict that Pacquiao will score a knockout win on Saturday based on their confirmation that he has indeed regained his stamina, speed and power that he had prior to his last KO win against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

Fans and fight observers want to know if Pacquiao’s pre-surgery injuries had something to do with his long KO holiday which began after his knockout win against Cotto in 2009.

Pacquiao’s impressive win over Bradley in their third and last fight has already given the fans a reason to believe that indeed he has already recovered and a knockout or a very convincing win over Vargas will confirm what Roach and Fortune were saying during the initial phase of training.

Watching how Pacquiao performs against Vargas on Saturday is important for the fans because they would get their money’s worth with the kind of fight they used to see during Pacquiao’s pre-injury matches which to them were really entertaining and exciting to watch. For that reason they will again buy the fight on PPV.

The other reason of course is for the fans to see how Pacquaio can cope with his dual responsibility as boxer and public servant as he did with the Vargas fight. A victory over Vargas would mean that his work in the senate isn’t a distraction in his training.

There are other reasons why fans would buy the fight on PPV including a powerhouse undercard that Arum had put together at a very affordable price.

Arum is confident the Nov. 5 card will do very well of PPV based on his recent sales assessment.

“We think we are going to do very, very big pay per view numbers. Do I know that for a fact? No… Am I optimistic? Off the charts. Off the charts optimistic,” Arum said.
