Op-Ed: Why Andre Ward will prevail over Sergey Kovalev on Nov. 19

Ward is the former unified WBA, WBC and Ring magazine middleweight champion and coming off a unanimous decision win against Alexander Brand of Colombia last Aug. 6 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Before the tune-up fight, there was a clamor for Ward to go for a knockout win over Brand to improve his career KO rate but the veteran Colombian proved hard to put down.

“We knew this guy was going to be really, really hard to knock out, he’s a veteran,” Ward said. “People got to realize that when a guy with his experience doesn’t want to get knocked out, it’s hard. He’s throwing punches from crazy angles, he’s got nothing to lose.” he added.

“I tried to press it, but it’s good to get the rounds,” said Ward, who is moving up to face Kovalec at 175 pounds light heavy weight limit.:

The 32-year-old unbeaten champ from San Francisco, California needed a tune-up fight as he has been inactive late in his career due to injury and partly because of his long-running feud with his former promoter.

Kovalev, who is putting his WBA (undisputed), IBF and WBO (Super) light heavyweight titles on the line is a tough opponent for Ward. While they are both unbeaten in their careers, Kovalev has a better knockout rate (84 percent) compared to Ward (50 percent).

But Ward moves faster and has the power in both hands as he can switch from an orthodox fighter to a southpaw.

A few days after the fight announcement, Ward was a slight favorite to win at -140 against + 120 for Kovalev.

Early predictions indicate that Ward will prevail over Kovalev if the fight is held today but the odds are expected to change as the fight draws near.
