Op-Ed: Why Amir Khan can still face Mayweather despite timing conflict

Mayweather is on his sixth and last fight in his $200 million six-fight contract with CBS/Showtime and will be on his 49th fight since he turned pro in 1996.

The unbeaten American boxer is yet to reveal the name of his next opponent but has mentioned Amir Khan for his upcoming retirement fight.

Khan is set to face former Manny Pacquiao foe Chris Algieri and if he prevails over the previously unbeaten New Yorker, he may just bag a lucrative fight against Mayweather on Sept. 12.

But Khan had voiced his apprehension on the Sept.12 schedule saying it could be in conflict with his religious observance of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

‘I can’t be ready for that date. Ramadan doesn’t finish until the end of July and I would need three months in training camp after that to prepare for a fight of this magnitude. The earliest I can be back in the ring after my fight here is late October or early November and that will have to be against another opponent,” said Khan, who has to beat Algieri to keep his hopes for the Mayweather fight alive.

‘I’ve told Floyd that and he assures me I’m still on his list. Of course I am still pursuing the fight with him but the next window for that is this time next year,’ Khan added.

But if Khan is indeed serious in seeking a lucrative fight against Mayweather, he has still six weeks to train following his observance of Ramadan which culminates by the end of July

Most fighters including Mayweather and Pacquiao train for just two months for major fights and their trainers had to slow down for fear of over training.

Unless Mayweather agrees to move the date to late September, Khan won’t have another opportunity to seal a lucrative fight contract with Mayweather.

Khan’s last option is to take the challenge and train seriously for the shortened period of six weeks instead of two or three months as he wanted.
