article imageOp-Ed: Week one of the NFL season sees some surprises

By Zach Gilliland     Sep 8, 2014 in Sports
After a long wait for the season to start, week one will finally be in the books after Monday night's games. It was a crazy first week of the NFL season.
One of the biggest surprises came with the Titans victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. After last season's success, many thought the Chiefs would be right back in the playoffs this season. Not that losing in week one eliminates them, but their loss was certainly shocking.
The Bills came away with a really big win on the road against the Chicago Bears. The Bills, who drafted Sammy Watkins No.4 overall, have playoff aspirations in year two under quarterback E.J. Manuel. Sunday was a good first step for Buffalo.
The Dolphins were able to keep constant pressure on Tom Brady, and Miami was able to upset the Patriots 33-20. Is this bad news for New England or good news for Miami? That's for you to decide.
Houston lost 14 in a row to close out last season, but a change at head coach and the addition of No.1 overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney has hopes high in Houston. Ryan Fitzpatrick was brought in to be the starter, and things went well for the Texans defense in week one, holding Washington to six points in a 17-6 win.
Carolina was without Cam Newton, but Derek Anderson played a solid game and led the Panthers to a 20-14 win over Tampa Bay in head coach Lovie Smith's Buccaneers debut.
The Vikings won big over the St. Louis Rams, who lost Sam Bradford to a season-ending injury. The Seahawks won big over the Green Bay Packers 36-16, in a potential playoff preview.
Another bright spot from the weekend came from in Atlanta, where the Falcons took down the New Orleans Saints 37-34 in overtime. Many analysts picked the Saints to win the division, so this was a shake-up from the preseason predictions.
Week one concludes Monday night, and then it's on to week two of the season. If the rest of the season is anything like the opening week, football fans are in for a great season.
