Op-Ed: Viloria-Gonzalez fight could land in Golovkin-Lemieux bout

The looming GonzalezViloria fight has been on the drawing board even before Viloria’s Saturday opening-round KO win against Soto at the Florentine gardens in Hollywood.

While formal negotiations have yet to start, there are persistent reports that the potential flyweight blockbuster could serve as the main supporting bout of the scheduled title fight between Golovkin and Lemieux on October 17.

The Golovkin-Lemieux fight is aimed at unifying Golovkin’s and Lemieux’s IBF titles and is expected to draw huge crowd at the Madison Square Garden.

Golovkin (33-0, 30 knockouts) is unbeaten in 33 pro fights with a 91 percent knockout rati,o having dispatched 30 of his 33 opponents by KO since he turned pro in 2006. Lemieux (34-2, 30 KOs) is no pushover, as he also has a high knockout ratio of 88 percent.

The huge crowd expected to watch the Golovkin-Lemieux fight will give Gonzales and Viloria the needed media exposure as the event will be covered by HBO on pay-per-view.

Gonzalez is coming off a TKO win against Oscar Sosa at The Forum, Inglewood, California to retain his WBC and The Ring flyweight titles.

The Nicaraguan veteran of 43 pro fights has a high knockout ratio of 91 percent, having dispatched 37 of his 43 opponents by knockout.

It would be a tough fight for Viloria (35-4-0, 21 KO’s), who is now on his fourth straight victory since losing to Juan Francisco Estrada in 2013.

A win against Gonzales would make Viloria the first boxer to give a dent on Gonzales’s immaculate career record. A dominating and convincing victory could also open a lucrative rematch against Gonzales, who ranks second to Floyd Mayweather in The Ring’s pound-for-pound ranking.
