Op-Ed: Vargas won’t survive Pacquiao’s speed, power in toe-to-toe battle

If Arum is right and Vargas will indeed go for it as planned, he may later regret doing it because Pacquiao will be relentless in his attack and Vargas may not be able to survive it.

Together with Arum, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also feels Vargas will engage Pacquaio in a toe-to-toe situation but Pacquiao thinks otherwise. He believes Vargas will run to keep a safe distance and use his superior height and reach to score and wait for an opportunity to land on his target.

“It’s unlikely that he will bring the fight to me,” Pacquiao said in Filipino Saturday. “He’ll play a waiting game. It would be better though if he tries to penetrate. That will make it a good fight, exciting,” he added.

If Vargas plans to come forward on fight night to score a KO win, Roach would be the first to celebrate because Pacquiao would gladly engage him at close range or even in a toe-to-toe situation.

Vargas did not say how exactly he will execute his KO plan but most likely he will do it in the early rounds to prevent Pacquiao from playing the aggressor’s role. If he does, he will regret it because Pacquiao is eager to score a KO win after long knockout holiday.

Vargas’ plan to mix it up with Pacquiao in the early rounds could just be diversionary in order to distract him as Vargas makes use of his superior reach to score and get ahead on points.

Hopefully, Vargas will realize before touching gloves that going toe-to-toe with fighting senator in the early rounds will only work in Pacquiao’s favor.

Best option for Vargas to have a fighting chance is to keep a safe distance and try to win on points using his superior height and reach.
