Op-Ed: Who should Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez fight next

Gonzalez, who hails from Nicaragua, is unbeaten in 44 pro fights and is now on his 10th TKO victory since his unanimous decision win against challenger Juan Francisco Estrada in 2012.

After his ninth TKO loss against Gonzalez, Viloria said there is no one in the 112-pound flyweight limit who can beat Gonzalez at this time.

“At this point, I don’t think anybody could. He’s really short, crisp with his punches. Very methodical. Right now, I don’t think anybody could beat Roman at that weight division,” said Viloria.

While Viloria may have a point in his assessment of Gonzalez’s skill and experience in the ring, having fought 44 times in a career spanning 10 years, there are at least three challengers in the 112 pounds limit who can give him a good fight.

Amnat Ruengroeng (16-0-0 (5 KOs)- Thailand

At 35, Ruengroeng may be considered past his prime — having started late his pro career a little less than four years ago because he had to serve time in prison for robbery — but his unconventional style and rough to almost dirty tactics could give Gonzalez a nightmare in the ring.

Ruengroeng, who rose to popularity when he outpointed Chinese Olympian Zou Shiming in Macau, China last March, is unbeaten in 16 fights since he turned pro in 2012.

Ruengroeng’s IBF flyweight title would also be a good incentive for Gonzalez to respond to the Thai IBF titlist’s call.

Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2-0, 24 KOs) – Mexico

Although Gonzalez has already proven his toughness against Estrada when they first met in the ring on Nov. 17 2012 — in a bout that ended in a unanimous decision win for Gonzalez — the Mexican rising star has made considerable improvements since then with seven straight wins to his credit.

A Gonzalez-Estrada rematch would be another good pay-per-view (PPV) generator for Golovkin’s next PPV fight which could be against either Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez.

Also, Estrada is easier to promote because he has a good name recall brought about by his past overseas fight exposure.

Donnie Nietes (37-1-4, 21 KOs) -Philippines

If Nietes can make a quick adjustment without a test fight at 112, he can be an enticing catch for Gonzalez because of the presumption that the Filipino light flyweight champion can’t move freely outside of his weight limit.

The ideal situation would be for Nietes to pick a less risky fight at 112 and if he performs well, he will be confident of facing Gonzales at his own comfort zone.

The proposed Gonzalez match would be Nietes’ richest fight once Gonzalez responds positively to his call and if he does, it would be Nietes’ toughest fight since turning pro in 2003.
