Op-Ed: Terence Crawford will regret facing Manny Pacquiao at 140 pounds

Arum may be right and Crawford may not be pleased with the choice of Pacquiao as his next opponent because he knows that Pacquiao is formidable at 140 pounds as he was knocking out opponents left and right even in fights below the light welterweight limit.

One of the reasons why Pacquiao has stayed a bit longer in the welterweight limit of 147 pounds was because of his search for more lucrative fights.

“The thing I like about a Pacquiao-Crawford fight, as it would probably be held at 140-pounds – which is a more natural weight for Manny Pacquiao. He’s really not a 147-pounder, although he’s been campaigning as one for years. Crawford is a sensational fighter, but Crawford on December 10th will have a major fight on HBO from Omaha, Nebraska. He gets by that fight and Manny beats Vargas, I would love to make Manny Pacquiao against Terence Crawford,” Arum said on ESPN’s First Take.

Crawford, who is unbeaten in 29 pro fights will defend his WBO light welterweight title against John Molina on Dec. 10 at the CenturyLink Center, Omaha, Nebraska.

It appears that Arum wanted to be sure that Crawford wins his next assignment which is the reason why he picked Molina, who has a record of six defeats since turning pro in 2006.

It seems Molina is nowhere in the level of Crawford at this time as can be gleaned from his recent fights against elite opponents including Adrien Broner, Lucas Matthysse and Humberto Sotto. He lost to each of these former world champions in succession.

Arum may have found a justification for picking Molina when he won over the rugged Ruslan Provodnikov last June at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York.

Barely a week before the fight, Pacquiao is still favored to win over Vargas and if he does, Pacquiao will be headed for another pay-per-view fight against Crawford early next year provided that the 29 year-old Omaha native wins over Molina on Dec. 10.

If everything comes into play as Arum had planned, Crawford will be in for his most lucrative fight of his career against Pacquiao but at the same time he will regret facing the fighting senator in the ring at 140 pounds because Pacquiao will be formidable in this weight limit and Crawford’s chance of winning will be regrettably low.
