Op-Ed: Roach succeeding in getting Pacquiao all fired up for May 2 fight

Pacquiao’s boyhood friend and Assistant Trainer Buboy Fernandez complains about the punishment he is getting whenever he does the mitts or spar with Pacquiao during practice sessions.

Fernandez, who is working with a group of young boxers known as the “Cayote Boys” in the gym including Juanito Rubillar and Reynante Jamili said that fans will see a ruthless, merciless Manny Pacquiao this time..

“This is the first time in the many years of my association with him that I saw him this merciless,” Fernandez assured. “In fact, merciless, to me, is an understatement. Ruthless, that’s the right word. Vicious. furious, whatever,“ Fernandez told veteran sportswriter Eddie Alinea.

“What I can assure you is that Manny is ibang-iba na. Sa attitude sa enssayo, determinasyon at dedikasyon. Napaka-seryoso niya ngayon at kita mo, feel mo na talagang gustong manalo,” he said (Manny is really a changed fighter in terms of attitude, practice, determination and dedication. He’s so serious now and you’ll see and feel that he really wants to win).

On the surface, Pacquiao seems to have no bad blood with Mayweather as he has been civil in his dealings with the unbeaten champion. But deep inside him , he’s angry and he seems to hate Mayweather for the defamation and racial assaults he suffered during the initial stages of fight negotiations.

It may have hurt Pacquiao deep inside because Mayweather’s camp did not just bully him but they seem to have also attacked the country as well. View news video here.

In his ESPN article published in 2010, Dan Rafael wrote: “Mayweather also used a homophobic slur against him, called him a “whore” and repeated his accusation that Pacquiao uses performance-enhancing drugs, even though Mayweather has never produced a shred of evidence,” quoting the widely circulated video.

Pacquiao may have recalled all those unfortunate events back in 2010 when he was at the receiving end of Mayweather’s arrogance and seeming racial attacks.

Few weeks before they finally came to terms on the May 2 superfight, Mayweather flexed his muscle again by downgrading Pacquiao’s camp and calling it the B-Side and proclaiming his camp the “A-Side.”

Pacquiao may have been truly hurt by the seeming Mayweather’s arrogance but he remained civil to him even when they met personally for the first time during the NBA game between Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.

All these insulting and demeaning actions by Mayweather may have angered Pacquiao as he stands toe-to-toe with sparring partners who are mimicking Mayweather’s fighting style at the Wild Card Gym.

Roach deserves to be credited for injecting his “mind games” concept in the training camp. Now Pacquiao’s dormant killer instinct seems to have been reignited whenever he recalls of what Mayweather had done to him during the six years of fight talks.
