article imageOp-Ed: Provodnikov vs.Matthysse could be a blockbuster fight

By Leo Reyes     Jan 29, 2015 in Sports
A potential blockbuster fight could happen on March 28 between welterweight contenders Ruslan Provodnikov and Lucas Matthysse at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Artie Pelullo of Banner Promotions. who promotes Provodnikov, said talks are ongoing for the two popular welterweight fighters to face each other in the ring.
Golden Boy Promotions owner Oscar de la Hoya who recently extended Matthysse's contract for five years believe that the fight could be a potential entry to the Fight of the Year award.
“We’re just in negotiations and we’re in the process. Provodnikov’s promoter is taking the lead, so we’re waiting to see. It’s a matter of time before that fight gets done,” said De La Hoya. “That should be one of those Fight Of The Year candidates. The talks are underway, and the talks are continuing, so I’m optimistic that that fight will get done.”
Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs), is coming off a TKO win against Jose Luis Castillo last Nov.28 in Luzhniki, Moscow in Russia following his split decision defeat against Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York where he lost his WBO light welterweight title.
The Russian brawler was on a five-match winning streak after losing to Mauricio Herrera in 2011 when he lost to Timothy Bradley via a unanimous decision in March 2013.
Known for his offensive fighting style and power punches, Provodnikov has improved tremendously since his early pro career in Russia when his manager introduced him to Freddie Roach, now his trainer.
While training at Roach's Wild Card Gym, Provodnikov met eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, who is likewise being trained by Roach. At the Gym, Provodnikov served as Pacquiao's sparring partner and they later became friends
Matthysse (36-3, 34 knockouts), who hails from Argentina, is the current WBC Inter-Continental Light Welterweight champion. He has several major fights to his credit including Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley, Devon Alexander, Humberto Soto, Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia and Roberto Ortiz, among others.
Also known as La Maquina, Matthysse is coming off two successive knockout wins against John Molina in April 2014 and against Roberto Ortiz in Sept.2014.
Although the fight is still under negotiation, there is little doubt it will soon be made as both their promoters have recognize the potential financial windfall the fight generate.
