Op-Ed: Pacquiao could figure in tune-up fight before end of the year

Pacquiao is recuperating from the surgery he had at the clinic of Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles after the Mayweather fight on May 2.

Pacquiao was scheduled to travel to the U.S. early this month for post-surgery therapy but he failed to show up at the doctor’s clinic.

Sought for comment on Pacquiao’s failure to keep his appointment with his doctor, Arum said Pacquiao isn’t acting professionally.

“Well, Pacquiao was supposed to come in to see the doctor, and for some reason, he decided to cancel it and come later,” Arum told Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN News on the sidelines of a Top Rank fight card in Dubai.

Shaking his head, Arum added: “You know, he’s not acting very professionally, in my opinion.”

“You got an operation like that, you got to do rehab, you got to get the doctor to look at it and guide you on the kind of rehab that you can do.”

Last week Pacquiao said there is no cause for worry as he downplayed Arum’s criticism.

“I respect Bob Arum. He’s just like a father to me. I believe he’s just voicing out his concern (for) me and I appreciate it. I don’t take it negatively,” Pacquiao said in a statement.

“But he has nothing to worry about (regarding) my injury. I’m doing the rehab myself. I’m recovering faster than expected,” Pacquiao said

Pacquiao sent Arum a video on the progress of his rehab. Arum noted that upon viewing the video, the therapists were stunned by the progress of the rehab.

“He sent us a video and the therapists are stunned at his progress. They said he could be back at the end of this year,” Arum said.

Arum has dangled the name of Terence Crawford as Pacquiao’s next opponent and with news of Pacquiao’s quick recovery, it is possible that he would do a tune-up bout against Crawford in November or early December this year.
