Op-Ed: Nonito Donaire out to halt Scott Quigg’s 31-fight winning streak

While nothing official has been announced about the proposed match, it appears that five-division world champion Donaire and WBA (Super) bantamweight champion Quigg will clash on Nov. 21 according to Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielz.

Nonito Donaire Sr., the father trainer of “The Filipino Flash,” is confident that his son will put an end to Quigg’s 31-fight winning streak.

“I’m not worried about this guy Quigg. He may be heavy-handed but he is not really strong, he’s easy to hit and he’s slow compared to Nonito,” adding that Quigg “has no one-punch knockout power, unlike Nonito.”

Although Quigg has managed to stay unbeaten in 31 fights spanning eight years since he turned pro in 2007, he hasn’t been tested against elite boxers like Donaire, who has faced some of the best fighters in his division.

Except for Kiko Martinez, who once held the IBF Super Bantamweight title, Quigg’s last five opponents were nowhere near the caliber of Donaire.

On the other hand, Donaire has faced some of the big names in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions including Fernando Montiel, Wilfredo Vázquez, Jr., Jorge Arce, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Vic Darchinyan and Nicholas Walters, among others.

It’s easy to say that Quigg is superior to Donaire in terms of fight record but Quigg’s chance of winning over Donaire is probably less than 50 percent based on the quality of opponents they both faced in the ring in the past three years.

No way will Quigg beat Donaire at the 122 pounds limit where he reign with an iron fist for years until he moved up to featherweight to look around for more lucrative fights, only to find out that he does not belong there after being mauled by featherweight king Nicholas Walters of Jamaica.

At 122, Donaire is be more agile and with proper training and conditioning, he will be back to his old deadly fighting form.

If Donaire is successful in his weight adjustment efforts, there is a good chance he will bag Qjuigg’s WBA Regular Super Bantamweight title on Nov. 21.
